The Mexico City-Toluca train "El Insurgente" will begin operations in January 2026

MEXICO CITY (apro) – The Mexico-Toluca train “El Insurgente” will begin operations at the end of January 2026, reducing travel times from two and a half hours to 40 minutes, announced President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
Although the civil and electromechanical work of the project has already been completed, the testing period for the next three months is still needed, so that the transport can be used in its entirety.
“We have already finished the civil works of the Mexico City-Toluca Train 'El Insurgente', the electromechanical work is practically finished and from now on the testing period begins (...) it is around three months,” the president indicated after carrying out a supervisory tour of the Santa Fe to Observatorio stations, a section that will just be opened to the public.
“That means that by the end of January 2026, the 'El Insurgente Train' will be available for the entire population,” he added.
During her speech, the head of the federal Executive took the opportunity to announce that the Observatorio-Juanacatlán section of Metro Line 1 will be launched in November.
For her part, the head of government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, thanked the federal, state and business sector authorities for their effort and coordination in positioning the Observatory Complex as the "grand gateway" to the west of the capital.
Currently, the Observatorio station is an important multimodal connection center that integrates the Collective Transportation System (STC) Metro, Cablebús, the Passenger Transportation Network (RTP), the West Bus Terminal and now, the Mexico-Toluca Train.
Delfina Gómez Álvarez, governor of the State of Mexico, pointed out that the new train, in addition to being a safe and economical means of transport, will help improve the quality of life of users in the State of Mexico, who will reduce their commutes and be able to enjoy more time with their families.
According to the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF), "El Insurgente" will operate with 20 trains to transport 140,000 passengers daily. This transportation system will connect the Toluca Metropolitan Area with the Mexico City Metropolitan Area via the Metro and other modes of transport that converge there.
The general director of the National Bank of Public Works and Services (Banobras), Jorge Alberto Mendoza, said that the first stage of operation of the "El Insurgente" Train (from Zinacantepec to Santa Fe) was a success, considering that it has transported 12.6 million people since its start of operations, with an average of 81 trips and 22,000 passengers per day.
Mendoza added that, with the extension of the route to Observatorio, the cost of the transfer will be between 15 and 90 pesos, depending on the route of each user.
"El Insurgente" is a project that began during the six-year term of former President Enrique Peña Nieto. Although construction started in 2014, it could not be completed due to technical issues. However, it was resumed during the presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who also failed to finish it due to budgetary constraints.
